What is a UTI and UTI symptoms

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are caused by bacteria entering the urethra. The bacteria multiply and this causes an infection. This infection can then spread to the bladder, the urinary tracts, the kidneys and even into the blood, potentially causing sepsis. UTIs are one of the most common infections to affect humans, they are very common, particularly in women, babies and the elderly. Bacteria can easily get into the urethra where they stick to the urinary tract lining.

  • The most common types of bacteria found to cause UTI's are Klebsiella pneumonia. Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus fecalis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Escherichia coli (E.coli) (occurring in 80-90% of UTIs). Without identifying the infection and stopping it, the infection will worsen, potentially causing serious health implications.

  • Types of UTIs

-Urethritis: an infection in the urethra or ureters.

-Cystitis: a infection in the bladder.

-Pyelonephritis: an infection in the upper urinary tract and or kidneys.

  • Two classification of UTIs

-Uncomplicated: occurs when there is no anatomical or functional    abnormalities to the

urinary tracts, bladder or kidneys. Infection occurs simply by contamination.

-Complicated: Infections occur in patients with anatomical or functional abnormalities of the

urinary tract. Physiological conditions can increase the risk of acquiring a UTI.
